Beginner's Guide to Texas Hold'em
So you're new to Texas Hold'em poker? Not a problem. Texas Hold'em poker is by far the easiest poker variant for a beginner to learn. Unlike other poker games like Omaha High or 7-Card Stud (which each entail many more possibilities for calculating odds), Hold'em can be learned by practically anyone in just a few minutes.

Mastering the game, however, requires patience and dedication and you must play fairly often in order to cultivate your skills and become a fairly consistent winner.

Now let's get started with the basics!

A typical game of Texas Hold'em proceeds as follows:

1. Once an acting dealer has been selected (as designated by the white DEALER button placed in front of them), the game begins and the two players seated to the immediate left of the acting dealer place a predetermined amount of chips into the pot so there is an initial amount to get things started. This action is called "posting the blinds". The player to the immediate left of the acting dealer posts the small blind, and the player 2 seats to the left of the acting dealer posts the big blind.

2. Each player is dealt two cards face down. These are called your "hole" or "pocket" cards.

3. After each player has been dealt their hole cards, a round of betting begins, starting with the player seated to the left of the big blind. This round is usually referred to as the "pre-flop" round. Like most games of poker, players may elect to "call", "raise", or "fold".

4. After the betting round ends, the dealer removes the topmost card from the deck and places it aside. This card is referred to as a "burn" card and is done to prevent cheating.

5. The dealer then removes the next three cards and places them face up on the table. This is called "the flop". The flop cards may be used by all players along with their two hole cards to form their best 5-card poker hand.

6. After the flop, another round of betting begins, starting with the player seated to the left of the acting dealer.

7. Once this betting round has concluded, the dealer burns another card and places an additional card face up alongside the 3 flop cards. This is called "the turn". Players may use this new card to form their best 5-card poker hand.

8. Another round of betting beings with the player seated to the left of the acting dealer.

9. The dealer burns one more card and places a 5th and final card face up alongside the 4 cards already the on the table. This is called "the river." Players may now use any combination of the five cards on the table plus their 2 hole cards to form their best 5-card poker hand.

10. A final round of betting begins, starting with the player seated to the left of the acting dealer.

11. Once betting has concluded, all players remaining in the game reveal their hands, beginning with the player seated to the left of the last player to call. This is called "the showdown", and the player with the best 5-card poker hand wins the pot.
